Another Spanish value...BORING!

Spanish wines can offer incredible quality and value. Year after year this country produces dozens of diverse, quality wines and bargain prices. But as we've said before, Spain is also awash in a sea of homogeneity. So many Spanish wines taste the same.
This is one of them.
We feel like we've had this wine before. A number of times - but made from different regions, producers - even grapes. There's nothing unique happening here.
But let's be fair, if you're going to be guilty of sameness, at least Spaniard winemakers, including the folks at Bodegas Castaño are guilty of sameness and quality. Their other offerings prove that.
On opening the wine is hot and spicy, but settles down quickly. It's got plenty of fruit, some structure, a bit of oak character, good backbone...blah, blah, blah. Sorry. We just can't get excited about this one.
All in all it's an enjoyable wine that was well made . But if you're looking for something unique or exemplary of a region, this isn't it. On the other hand, if you're looking for a quick grab and this bottle's staring back at you for $11.99, you're not going to be disappointed.
Since this was a gift, we're not sure what the price paid was, but we're guessing somewhere in the $14 range. You can find it online for anywhere between $12.99 and $19.99.
