Some of the most amazing wines I've had this decade have been Portuguese whites. When you factor in their affordability, this category is a haven for mind-blowing wine drinking experiences. And selection is improving quickly. Those are among the reasons why you'll be seeing a good bit of coverage this month on wines from Herdade do Esporao, one of Portugal's most reliable producers.
Today's example is the 2020 Herdade do Esporao Branco Colheita Alentejo $18 (Sample) made from organically-grown antão vaz and viosinho grapes and partially fermented in concrete vats. The result is a wine that sits comfortably between a porch drinking refresher and a cerebral, thought -provoking wine. This white is a bit of a Swiss Army knife. It's got lean, yet energetic fruit, terrific and linear acidity, beautiful mineral elements, and even a touch of salinity. Very well-made, versatile as a companion/complement, and sure to be crowd pleasing. 90 Points.
