2018 Aridus Syrah Arizona $46
Impressive. An unexpected and pleasant surprise from Arizona, this impressive syrah is very reminiscent of quality examples from Northern California. It's got medium density, a well-rounded body, and better than average intensity all framed by honest structure, firm acidity, and solid grip. Its 32 months in oak (50/50 new/neutral) is evident, but not imposing, resulting in a balanced wine with fruit and smokey goodness. This is a wine that needs no caveat (i.e. "Not bad for an Arizona wine") as it has no detectable shortcomings whatsoever. More than that, it's actually pretty damn good. Enjoy with grilled steak and hearty laughter. A bit pricey at $46, but you'll have no trouble emptying the bottle. Just 98 cases produced, so purchase on the winery's website. (Sample) 90 points.
