Malbec often comes across as harsh, coarse, and monolithic. It's a beast of a grape and its tannins can be off-putting when unchecked or out of balance, which makes it something of a cousin to petite sirah. But there are exceptions to every rule, and this is one of them. The Piattelli is no shrinking violet, but the rough edges have been smoothed out and polished to a supple sheen. Its black fruit is framed by moderate acidity and a discernable structure, making it unlike most malebc in this price range thanks also to an irresistible drinkability. Yummy and refined, and at $12, it's a steal and a half. 92 points.
