From the island known for such indigenous grapes as nerello mascalese, cataratto, and grillo, this 100% merlot is a bit of an oddity. Nevertheless, it delivers, and with surprising honesty. Fully round, fruit-forward, and even with a solid dollop of tannic energy paying homage to merlot's tendencies, it is also steadfastly Italian with its edgy acidity and clean finish. Unexpected at any price, but particularly at this bargain level. 92 points
